Can't connect with cameras via Android app when Google Fi VPN is activated Android 9

Using Android phone over Google Fi network connected to good wifi network using Google Fi VPN cameras show up as offline but I can access them via chrome browser on my laptop.  When I turn off VPN I can quickly access the cameras via the phone.  Just started happening when upgraded to Android 9.  Has anyone else seen this?
