The door sort of slides out a small amount first before opening... ( in when closing )

Without batteries close the door and with thumb slide it forward ( to lens ) and see if it closes all the way.

The mechanism may be sticking

It can be a little bit of a struggle to get the battery door to close properly even with correct batteries.  A possible issue is that the batteries are slightly too long - what brand and model are they?
