I have no idea what I’m doing with the app, terminology is confusing.

Please build a simplified option (‘Basic’ vs ‘Expert’ level toggle switch), with pictographic UI.

All I want is to have my cameras active when I’m away, off when I’m home. Simple.

Do you mean

  • manual switching
  • scheduling or
  • geofencing  ?

Geofencing thanks.

it used to be much more obvious on previous app versions.

First, reserve use of "Arm Away" for when you are actually away.  Use "Arm Home" and "Standby" when you are home.  Note you can modify the device rules in all three of these modes.

Create a "Leave" automation that changes the mode to "Arm Away" when you leave.  Make sure this automation is enabled in "Arm Home" and "Standby".  (It's ok to just enable it in all three modes).

Create an "Arrive" automation that changes to mode to either "Arm Home" or "Standby" when you router.  This is only enabled in "Arm Away" mode.

While there are some potential gotchas, go to the Routines tab, click on Automations, click on the "+" at the top and choose Add Arrive/Leave. You will need 2 Automations - one to Leave and another to Arrive. For Leave, give it a name and then edit the geofencing location. Verify the location if it shows immediately or enter the exact address, including zip code which will pop up the address the app can look up.  Save the location. Click on Anyone Arrives and click on the Everyone Leaves in the bottom section. Choose the appropriate phones to use and Save. Lastly, click on Add an Action and choose the mode to change to, most likely Arm Away. Save again.

Do the same thing for Arrive, using the Anyone Arrives choice and phones and change the mode to Arm Home. Note that you may need to check your various modes to ensure proper rules are set. Also, read this FAQ and embedded links:

Your response has only confirmed the original reason for my post. Clearly the UI on this app has been designed by engineers and experts. It's just way too complex and requires way too much understanding for ordinary customers, unlike the previous app.

I've attached a sketch for you to forward to Arlo dev team. Please provide a toggle switch for the app to go to an 'Easy' mode with only the essentials required. See image attached.

For most of your users, something like this is all we want and need.  Regards, Chris
