Am I right in thinking it doesn’t ring so that you can hear it in the house it just alerts your mobile?

If you have an existing door chime, then it can ring that - assuming the doorbell you are replacing is wired to the chime.  Though some chimes aren't compatible, most are.

 

There is also the Chime 2 accessory which which will ring inside the house (connected to the Arlo cloud with wifi).
