Are you referring to the "ring" around the push button or the red IR LED used for night vision?

Interested in the reply regarding a red light around the button as I'm experiencing the same issue atm.
It starts white twice and then goes red.

Take a look at the article linked above. A solid amber LED indicates a power issue, you may need to check the voltage of your transformer to make sure it meets the minimum requirements.

I was getting 27v from my power source. Too much I presume.
After reading these messages it seems that I need to subscribe to a plan to have this working. Is that correct?

A subscription won't help a power issue. Install an appropriate transformer and try again.
