I have wired up the doorbell as per instructions, all works except the mechanical chime is not ringing. I disconnected the doorbell and touched the wires together and still did not work, it only rings when I disconnect the power kit and then touch the doorbell wires together

The power kit has a mode switch on its side, what mode is it switched to?

I got it sorted I think, my doorbell setup has power to the bell at all times so I don't need the power kit. Is this correct? It seems to work ok without the powerkit installed.

The purpose of the power kit is to prevent power from going through the chime (unless the doorbell is pressed).  That protects the chime.

It'd be best to be able to run with the powerkit installed.  Note the switch on the powerkit should be in the "O" position.
