It appears the latest update eliminated the activity zone feature for the doorbell. The option no longer exists and I've been getting false positive motion detection notifications left and right.

Activity zones are still present on both my wirefree doorbells. I suppose the wired version could have an issue but that seems unlikely.
Have you tried both the app as well as the web client (my.arlo.com)?

Yep that’s exactly what happened. I figure that out soon after posting this. Would be nice if Arlo made that more obvious via the app when it happens. It would probably save them a lot of customer service headaches I’m guessing.
