When buying the doorbell, I read that it needed a 8-24v transformer only to then later on find out it also needed 10VA. My transformer is rated 8v 1a, therefore only delivering 8VA. Does anyone know what will happen if I try to hardwire it? Will the battery still charge, just at a lower rate?

Usually the VA rating relates to the power capacity rating for the transformer.

This means the transformer will safely operate at that rating without failure and is usually factored using  an open air convection cooling environment.

If the power loading exceeds the rating then you risk overheating the transformer unless you somehow provide extra cooling.

Will it still work, yes since the voltage meets the required value.

Question will be can the transformer provide the extra current requirement or will the voltage drop to limit the power rating.

Also consider the voltage drop in the feed wires as this will further drop the voltage measurement at the doorbell.
