Arlo Pro VMB4000 base station with external USB storage
If you connect the doorbell to the base (and not your home wifi), then recordings will be saved on the USB drive.
However, the only way to view the recordings is to remove the USB storage, and connect it to a PC.
If you had a smarthub (VMB4540 or VMB5000), then it would be possible to see the local recordings in the app. But that is not possible with the VMB4000.

You have connect the doordell to the base instead if your home wifi. Have you done that?
Also, what base station do you have?

Would this work if connected via Wi-Fi?
It will not work if the doorbell is connected to your home wifi. It needs to be connected to the closed wifi coming from the smarthub.
Note that if you have a VMB4000, then you likely have Pro 2 or Pro cameras. Those cameras have 7-day free cloud storage. The doorbell does not - so you won't see any recordings at all from the doorbell in the app or the browser, unless you have a subscription. As I said earlier, the VMB4540 would let you see recordings in the app (but not the browser).
