I’m using the Arlo video doorbell and have set it up such that my phone shows alerts if anyone moves in the activity zone. Which is fine except that it alerts me every time I enter or leave the house.
is there any way, the doorbell can be set to identify the owners of the device such that their movements are ignored? What I’d envisaged was the equivalent of geofencing whereby the position of my mobile phone is picked up and the device knows to silence alerts.

Not currently. There used to be a "known faces" feature but that was short-lived and no longer available.

You can of course use geofencing...
