I'm placing my door bell according to the instructions (4' high, ajacent to the door).  However my door is covered by a porch 3' off the ground, extending approx 8' to porch steps. Will this affect the operation?

Not sure exactly what you are asking.  The doorbell is normally placed in about the same spot as the previous traditional doorbell.  If's perfectly fine if the doorway is on a covered porch.  My own door is on a porch that sounds similar to yours.
