My cameras are not recording when it senses motion. Do I need a SD card inserted for it to start recordind

Either you need an Arlo Secure (or Secure Plus) Subscription or you need an SD card inserted. (or of course both).

IMO the subscription is the better path. Local storage has a lot of limitations, which results in a poor user experience.

In the US, Arlo Secure will give you 4K recording.  In other countries, you'll need Arlo Secure Plus (otherwise you will end up with 2K recordings).
