I have just purchased the ultra 2 xl kit with 2 cameras. I read the detection range is 7.5metres using just the battery. I have seen that the pro versions of you have plugged in via ac that detection is 15m. My question is what about if you connect the solar charging panels to the ultra 2 will that increase the range as it will keep the battery fully charge at all times. I assume ac and solar would be the same as the unit would be using full power…

if not does that mean the extension in range is only when it is powered up purely by the mains.

o I forgot to say also I assume the detect extension via ac etc would be the same on the ultra as the pro.. or am I wrong.

Neither AC power nor the solar panel increases the range of detection. That is limited solely by the PIR sensors in the camera just as it is for any other device that uses PIR sensors such as motion-detection outdoor lights.

Where are you seeing that?  It's not the case - the range of the PIR detection is about the same on all the Arlo Cameras.  The doorbell spec is a bit shorter ( 5m for the AVD1001, 3m for the AVD2001).

The three cameras spec'd at 15m are using pixel detection, and not PIR.  The starred Pro models will use pixel detection when AC powered, but not when on solar panels or battery.  Using pixel detection requires the camera to always be capturing and analyzing the video.  Solar panels just trickle-charge the battery, they don't provide enough power for 24x7 video capture and processing.

The Ultra/Ultra2 models unfortunately don't use pixel detection.

@JamesC - the Essential Indoor model is missing from this article.

Also, Arlo.com (doorbell comparison) says the AVD2001 range is 3m, and the KB article says 5m.  So one of these should be corrected.

FWIW, the AVD2001 datasheet doesn't have the range listed at all - motion detection isn't even listed as a feature (which IMO should also be fixed).
