Are you able to connect the base station to a modem wirelessly, or is ethernet the only connection source available?

The base stations require ethernet. They can be connected through a wifi extender (using the extender's ethernet out). If the issue is the base station location, then powerline networking is another option.
If your modem is connected to your router, then you should connect the base to one of the router's LAN ethernet ports.
