I am writing to request that Arlo expand its current "Person Recognition" AI capabilities to include individual Pet Recognition. Right now, the system can differentiate between specific humans and vehicles, but treats all animals as a generic "Animal."

From a computer vision perspective, dogs actually possess an equal—or in some cases, superior—number of distinct, geometric, and textural markers for AI recognition compared to humans. While human recognition relies heavily on standard facial spacing (eyes, nose, mouth), canine biometrics offer multiple layers of unique identification features that a trained AI model can capture:

  • Distinct Coat Patterns and Color Blocking: Unlike the relatively uniform skin tones of humans, dogs possess highly distinct merle, brindle, spotted, or patched fur configurations that act like visual fingerprints.
  • Muzzle and Nose Geometry: The length, width, and angle of a dog's muzzle, paired with unique whisker spot patterns, create a sharp geometric profile.
  • Ear Morphology: The dramatic variation in ear shapes (floppy, cropped, bat, button, **bleep**) and how they sit on the skull offers highly static, easily identifiable shapes for an AI.
  • Size, Stature, and Silhouette: The immense physical diversity between breeds (and even mutts) means that a dog's overall silhouette, height-to-length ratio, and tail carriage provide instant macro-level recognition data that humans lack.

Many families consider their pets to be central members of the household. Being able to see a notification that says "Rudy detected" instead of a generic "animal/dog detected" would drastically improve the user experience and put Arlo ahead of competitors in the smart home security market. Please consider adding this capability to the Arlo Secure roadmap.
