Hey All,

About to buy 2 replacement cameras but this will mean I need to upgrade the app to the new version. I’m currently using geo-fencing based on the below setup.

Can anyone confirm if Arlo have fixed geo-fencing in the new app and the below setup is achievable? Tia

2 iphones - one master login and then one logs in using a separate login with granted access

2 cameras and 1 video door bell

currently I have in the old app it set so that geo-fencing is the default and if both phones leave the house it sets to away mode and arms and then once one of the phones returns it changes to home mode which is set to schedule. The schedule is from 8pm - 6am to be armed and 6.01am-7.59pm to be disarmed.

I've also found that if watching live stream and there's a flurry of activity, the tracking freaks out and the entire stream crashes. You won't regain a feed until the activity stops, so is completely useless. You won't know your house is being robbed until after the fact. Alerts can also be delayed by several hours.

do you think if this getting worse is starting with 5.5.4, or has it been like this since versions ago?

Wanna add this to the issues list I have be consolidating?

@alex_loo  the arm away has been an issue since forever ago, live stream crashing is a new thing for me. I've since turned off tracking to see if that changes anything there.   I've changed some more settings now and will test it out after work today. My arm away did not activate again this morning. It is infuriating to say the least.

@alex_loo I can confirm as of now that turning off tracking has not solved the crashing during live stream if motion is detected. So, it's completely useless. If I were being robbed, they could just the camera amd everything else in my home and I'd be none the wiser till long after the fact.

hi @HanSoloMumma ,

So after updating to the latest 5.5.4, I turned on "video settings >> auto zoom & tracking" of a camera which is ARMED.  Then:

  • turn on LIVE streaming (which did not crash and is streaming normally), then
  • walk to in front of the camera, triggering notification and local recording (but no crash).  streaming continues

Was I testing this correctly?

no subscription, all ultra 2 cameras, VMB5000 with SD card.

@alex_loo  So long as you're viewing the live stream from another location via the Devices menu (bottom of the screen, 4th icon along) and press the play button on the chosen camera, then yes, that's where it crashes for me as soon motion is detected

Ok, let me try streaming live, away from home.

@alex_loo  I'm on v 5.6.0 28817 now and have had a couple of delayed yet accurate automated arm/disarms.  When it hasn't worked, I've been successful in making it work by re-saving my google location in the Arlo app, and that has then triggered the correct arrive or leave status to switch on or off. This is the furthest I've ever got to it working as it should.  I have calibrated my Google maps numerous times, and my phone isn't overly old (Samsung S21), so I don't understand how the gps isn't accurately working with Arlo.

still not a good idea to have to manually update/correct the GPS info to ARLO app.  It should be seamless, providing peace of mind.  I just don't want to check it every time and so something manually to fix it.

But thanks for the finding. BTW, I don't have 5.6.0 here yet.  How do you "re-save" the google location in the ARLO app?  Some new feature there?

(as a side note, using the same device, I can rely on the geofencing from Google Home Automation to trigger things, including ARLO modes.  In fact, I have stopped using ARLO app's geofencing routines, and used GHA to switch modes instead)

@alex_loo The re-saving isn't anything new I dont think, it's more just changing yr location then adding it back to where it should be, or expanding it from a small area to large radius, then save again. It's 100% not something you should have to do, however does at least give us a sense of that is where the issue seems to lie - automations just aren't working because it isn't working out where you are. You may have already got that far in your thinking, but I was far from it 😆

Thx for the tips re GHA - I'll have an explore of that when I have some time.

If you go into the screen where you set the radius, you should see

"Manually enter an address, or change the marker on the map below by long pressing on desired location"

Note I am running 5.5.3 on an iPhone.

I've never needed to adjust the marker.

Yes I know this screen.  (it would be outrageous, if I am telling this community that I don't know this screen, after complaining about geofencing for such a long time, eh?)

This is for entering GPS location as parameter to the geofencing rule.  It is NOT a "refresh my location to ARLO" button.  It does not necessarily fix/update the GPS coordinates of my device that ARLO app/cloud might have missed out from its currently running geofencing routines.

Anyway as said in the other post, even if this could fix geofencing, I just won't accept this manual step.  ARLO has to fix its rubbish geofencing routines.

I agree it doesn't recalibrate the GPS (I don't think that is even possible).

@alex_loo it's worked! First time ever!

1000026192.jpgI had a go at rekeying my home address into the Locations setting, just to see if that would make a difference, so maybe fingers crossed that's the end of that issue.

Can't see the picture.  Can super users approve it?   Even though I understand you don't "work" for ARLO

Ah shame. Was just a screenshot of the arm leave and disarm/Standby notifications. I went out again later on and it didn't revert to Standby when I arrived home again, so the elation was short lived.

How many devices do you have for ARLO geofencing?

Anyway even for multiple devices, my experience is still that sometimes it does NOT work for some reason.

If you have multiple devices and you experience perfect geofencing over at least a week, please let me know mate

We can and I just did.

FWIW, that is the only extra privilege we have.  But the only way we can tell that an image is pending approval is to go into the approval queue.  When reading forum posts, we just see the image whether it was approved or not.

The mods normally do keep up with the approvals, but there sometimes is a lag.  If you can't see an image, you can send me a PM, then I will review the queue the next time I log in.

FWIW, "arrive" was completely reliable for me when it was set to "always enabled".  I tested that for about 5-6 weeks.

A couple of days ago I reset the enable list so "arrive" was only enabled for "Arm Away".  Since I did that it has missed two triggers - keeping the system in "Arm Home" until I manually changed it.  I've passed that info on to Arlo, hopefully it will help them track down the bug.

Just 2 devices. Arm arrive (standby) hasn't worked the last few times I've come home, so it's back to manually disarming. Sigh.

How do you pass it to ARLO?  Wondering if they could look into this from a multiple device context (vs your single device scenario)

They reached out to me and asked for more information. I believe they are looking at multiple devices as well, as they asked about that.

My failure mode is quite targeted ( my Geofencing Arrive automation doesn't always run when it is only enabled in Arm Away), but that would affect multiple devices as well.

The old platform is so easily to programme and understand. Schedule in charge, Arm ON in the nighttime, and then in daytime, ARM maybe ON or OFF depending on the GEOFENCING. This is the easiest concept for most people but I don't know why it doesn't work now.

As one using the ARLO SECURE for more than 5 years, I can only sigh...
