Is there still an option to block off parts of your recording screen from picking up motion or is this a subscription only feature

You can't actually block detection in any way - the PIR sensor sees the whole area and can't be masked. Activity zones can be used but those require AC power and/or a subscription. However, zones won't prevent detection and recording, just notifications and cloud storage.
