Does anyone know how to get the mounting plate off the camera base? I attached it by mistake before putting it up and now can't figure out how to get it off.

It does not just slide off. The base wraps around the plate edge and the plate seems to be snapped in place, fitting flush with the base.

There are two parts - the plate on the camera which seems permanently attached (maybe not - I haven't tried) and the mounting plate which slides off as per the manual.  Normally, you just need the latter off, not the former.  WHat are you attempting to do?
