can i use a 1TB external harddrive for local storage such as the Passport - which is USB powered?  or does the external HD have to have its own power source?

I assume the video storage on the local hard drive will NOT be overwritten at the 1 week interval like the cloud recording... that the Local storage will continue to store without overwriting until it is full.  correct?

Thanks!

You can use any USB drive on the Pro base... up to 2 TB ( fat 32 format )

It can be a usb stick or usb powered or external powered, doesn't matter.

As to overwriting, you have a choice.

Remember tho, you can not access the data unless you EJECT the drive as normal for USB and then view the mp4 files.

The big thing about powered vs. unpowered is how much power is supplied by the port and how much the device will draw.  If it works on a standard USB port, it should work on the base.  Only testing would tell for sure.

FWIW, I had a powered drive on my base but switched to a thumb drive - much easier to remove since I didn't have to unplug the power supply to be able to see the drive on the computer.  Not 1TB but a 16GB thumb drive still has >8GB left on it in my usage over the past couple of months.
