What does the base station do?

In reading literature I do see an explanation for using Arlo cameras without a base station.  Further I would like to know:

1. what the base station does/provides?

2. what the mobil apps provide?

The Arlo cameras ( Arlo , Arlo PRO ) only work with a base unit... base gets hooked into router by ethernet cable.

Arlo Q cameras ( indoor rated ) hook directly in to your home wifi router

The Base sets up it's own wifi system to talk to the cameras only ( no other devices can hook in )

The mobile apps allow you to access and set the cameras, view live and record.

Yes but you obviously don't have the Pro base station functions like the siren or USB back up recording
