Do my Arlo cameras work at all without the base station turned on?

I just wanted to know if my base station is turned off, will my cameras still record and save footage somewhere or do my cameras just become completely useless.

No, you're cameras need the base station to work. If you shut your base station down and not the cameras your camera batteries will die extremely fast due to them looking for the base.

You say the batteries will die extremely fast? How fast would that be

I haven't tested this myself but it could be a matter of 1 to a few days, depending on initial battery levels. The camera keeps trying to connect to the base which is now nonexistant. Either use the Disarmed mode which still allows you to use live view or use Settings, My Devices and  turn the camera off.
