We recently visited relatives for the holidays who live more than 100 miles away and our phones automatically connected to their home Wi-Fi. While there, we would get notifications of motion actvity from our Arlo system but we were unable to view the activity or library because we were not connected to our home Wi-fi. Without having to purchase additional equipment, how can this be resolved?

You do not need to be connected to your home wifi, that's only required for initial setup.
I have viewed my cameras while travelling all over the world.
What happens when you try and view the library?
Have you tried using the web interface https://arlo.netgear.com ?
Have you tried while using data instead of wifi .
