Rather than switch between solar and mains connections, I was wondering if anyone has wired up both at the same time? A little splicing if wires wouldn't take long but I'm concerned about wiring the solar panel to the mains. Is it possible?

Not sure why you'd want to do this. Running g off AC power keeps the battery charged so it will continue to work for a long time if power is cut. And then there's the issue of how to manage 2 external power supplies which could lead to one interfering (perhaps badly) with the other.
