Will I have a record of activations on my phone or browser or must I subscribe to another service or purchase an additional device?

You have two choices:
1) after the trial subscription expires, purchase a suitable plan which is required for cloud recordings.
2) Purchase a SmartHub along with the camera(s) so you can set up local recordings in the hub's settings. You can view any recordings using the app while at home on your network. When remote, you have to set up either port forwarding or a VPN on your router which effectively puts you on your home network and allows you to view videos. Note that local recordings aren't nearly the same as cloud recordings.
