Am I correct that I can view live footage w/o a smart hub but if I want to view previous (stored) footage I’ll need a hub and a subscription?

You'd need a smarthub (VMB4540 or VMB5000) or a subscription.

Without a subscription you are limited to direct access to local storage.  https://kb.arlo.com/000062337/What-is-Direct-Storage-Access-and-how-do-I-use-it

Some of the limitations are

  • recordings can only be seen in the app (not a browser)
  • recordings can only be seen from the primary account (not friend accounts)
  • manual recordings and snapshots cannot be saved
  • there are no thumbnails
  • accessing recordings remotely requires either a VPN or port forwarding to be set up in the router - which some find difficult.
