do you need to charge the batteries on initial set up, and how oftrn do you need to charge the batteris

The batteries prob come shipped with about 80% charge ( normal for li-ion cells ) so YES, I would top them off.
How often you need to charge is more based on usage. If you record alot, you'll need to recharge sooner.
Most of my cameras go 2+ months of normal use.... low use cameras go 3+
Spec usage is 5 mins per day or less of record or live view
Morse is faster than texting!
