Suddenly today, my base stations are no longer storing my recordings. I do not have a subscription. I know my equipment is no longer supported, but I thought it would continue working.

According to arlo the pro2 camera series is still supported although without a subscription you loose user support.
The pro2 Cameras normally record to cloud storage for 7days free so is this that is missing or are the recordings not being backed up to the base USB device?
If you’re getting the camera requires a subscription error you will likely need to delete all devices from your account and reinstall again from scratch.
I have seen any explanation for this to suddenly happen but you’re one of many so far.
