Right now I'm connecting my computer to the internet through the good graces of a Motorola Surfboard sb6141 modem. I would like to add an Arlo Pro 2 surveillance camera system to my network. Unfortunately, my modem has one and only one ethernet port. Can I solve my issues with an Ethernet Switch? I'm thinking of purchasing a Netgear 5 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (GS5605NA). Do I have to have a router? Do I need both a router and an internet switch?

Unless you have the ISP supply 2 addresses for your computer as well as the base, the switch won't help. Having a router in place helps by also adding a firewall between your devices and the Bad Guys. Being connected directly to the Internet is generally a bad idea. Depending on your need for speed, an inexpensive router should be fine. Just be sure to change the router password.
