Are you thinking these are connected somehow?  

Manual Pan and Zoom can't be turned off.  4K and 2K cameras have and auto track and zoom feature, but the Essentials are 1080p and don't have that feature.

When did the camera start to only take stills?  Also, if you download one, are you getting an mp4 file or a jpg?
