We live in a busy street so the camera detects much motion. We have set up a specific area to detect but that doesn't seems to work. Is it possible to let detection do it's work and safe the videos without us receiving a warning signal.  Second problem: how do I turn of the light that turns on every time something is approaching the camera? It makes the battery run empty to quick.

It sounds like you set up an activity zone.  One thing you should be aware of - activity zones don't improve battery life.  The camera always streams when it detects motion (whether it is inside the zone or not), and then Arlo Cloud analyzes the video.  If the motion is outside the zone, both the notification and recording is supressed.

If the goal is to reduce notifications, but keep the recordings - then you can use the smart notifications to filter out notifications for vehicles, animals, and all other motion.  You can also eliminate notifications altogether by turning them off in the camera mode.  https://kb.arlo.com/42/What-are-modes-and-rules-and-how-does-Arlo-use-them

If you want to improve battery life, you will need to reposition the camera so that there is less traffic in the field of view.

Go into the video settings, and select "low light settings".  Turn on nightvision, and turn off the spotlight.

The camera will record IR (which will look black & white) when there isn't enough visible light.

I've done what you recommended. Thanks. Last question: when somebody is detected we see on the safe video only the last steps when he/she is walking out of the detection area. Looks as if the camera is always too late with recording. What to do?

You can try increasing the motion sensitivity.  https://kb.arlo.com/41/How-do-I-change-the-motion-sensitivity-on-my-Arlo-camera

The camera is most sensitive to motion across the field of view, and it is more sensitive at the bottom of the field of view than the top.

And now for the very last question: if I turn off notifications is the camera than still detecting and recording motion?

Yes.
