Cannot connect to wi fi and the camera does not pair and there is no blinking light when the pair button is pressed for 3 seconds. The camera appears to be malfunctioning.

Try a factory reset.  Press the pair button until the camera LED flashed amber (~15 seconds).  Then try adding the device from the app.

 

Also, 

  1. Make sure you are selecting the Essential Gen 2 when you "add device", and not the older Essential
  2. Make sure the phone is connected to your home wifi
  3. If you use a VPN on on the phone, turn it off during the install.
