I’m using a VMB4000 base with both  1st &2nd generation essentials cameras. I’m getting notifications of motions but there are no recordings. I connected a flash drive thinking that would help. But nothing

Do you have a subscription?

Note that the VMB4000 supports local recording, but not playback.  The only way to see the local recordings is to eject the storage from the app, and connect it to a PC.  Have you tried that?

No subscription. Before I was able to play back for up to a week. I have had the Arlo Base Station for years with no problems. Then I decided to purchase Gen 2 cameras and merge them with the base station and now no recording or playback.  Also the Gen 2 camera will not show any recording on flash drive

Is the Gen 2 camera connected to your home wifi or is it connected to the VMB4000?

Do you now have more than 5 unsubscribed cameras in the account?  If you are over that limit, then you lose the free 7-day cloud storage for your legacy cameras.
