If you have no base, then you need a subscription for recordings. The single-camera Arlo Secure would be sufficient.
If you get a base, you can save recordings locally. However, if you want to see those recordings in the app, you need a smarthub (VMB4540 or VMB5000).
There are limitations to local storage:
- Recordings are only available in the app (not the browser)
- Recordings only available to the primary account (not friend accounts)
- No ability to make manual recordings and snapshots.
- No thumbnails
- Remote access requires router settings changes which some find difficult - and which cannot be made on some networks (for instance StarLink and T-mobile broadband).
Given the cost of the smarthub combined with the limitations, IMO the single camera subscription is the best option.
