A friend wants to use a Essential Indoor 2nd Gen camera but point it at his backyard through a kitchen window. I can't explain why he doesn't want to use a outdoor camera. Will an indoor camera work through a window or will the video quality be degraded? Will it not sense movement, people, noise, etc ...?

The cameras rated for outdoors use a PIR (passive IR) sensor so won't work through glass since the glass blocks the needed IR. However, the INDOOR camera will work fine through glass since it uses pixel-change detection which has nothing to do with IR. Note that Night Vision must be turned off or the camera's IR LEDs will reflect off the glass. The glass can have an effect on image quality but usually not noticeably. Be sure to remove any screen since that will affect the image.
