My audio doorbell doesn’t work if the front door is shut. The door is metal so I’m thinking that the metal is blocking the doorbell from connecting to the smartbase. Has anyone ever had this happen? I’m so upset because I really wanted to be able to use this security system

That's very likely the issue. The easiest solution is to move the doorbell to the siding so the signal can more easily penetrate the house to the base. I'm sure you don't want to have to switch to a fiberglass door...

If having the door open solves the problem, it's likely that the metal door is blocking the signal when closed. What is your house construction? What material is the siding made of? Anything metal that gets in the way can be causing the problem as well as thick walls, etc.
MOving the base may also provide a better signal between the doorbell and base.
