Considering purchasing Arlo but am not clear on something. Our router is located upstairs but we want the Arlo cameras situated downstairs. Is it correct that the Arlo hub has to be connected by cable to the router? If so, with the hub and router upstairs, are the cameras going to work downstairs?

It is regular WIFI network of the base and cameras... as with all wifi, max distance is about 300 ft, the the low end is determined by what the signal has to go thru and I have seen it as low as 30 when thru rebar and concrete / metal walls, etc..

So the best judge of range is another wifi device and your router,,, how well does the signal travel in your home.

And, yes the Base is usu plugged into the router with the 6 ft or so cable , so it does sit near your router
