I have some older arlo cameras and I'm looking to upgrade. I want to get the latest 4k cameras, do these need to be plugged in to utilise the 3 second look back feature? I need to decide if I need to buy power supplies and cables.

Yes.  That feature is now called foresighthttps://kb.arlo.com/000062053/How-does-the-Foresight-feature-work-on-my-Arlo-camera

Thanks. So I need a subscription as well. Wow that looks expensive.

So according to this:

if I buy new 4K cameras I can only use them as a live camera without a subscription? There's no recording at all?

even without a subscription they will record to a SD card in the hub.  There won't be pics, just numbered files so it's a pain to navigate them.  The main user is the only one who can view them from the app and only when connected to the same wi-fi as the hub unless you give the wife or whoever your credentials to log in.

I can get more features than that with cameras that have image quality that is just as good and cost a third of the price. I can't say I'm very impressed with the new subscription model. For me the appeal of the arlo cameras was the app, notifications, and the seven day recording retention. I thought paying for longer retention was a fair deal if you wanted it. Now it feels like I'm paying premium price for cameras that are crippled without a subscription.
