How far can the camera detect motion on maximum setting as mine only seems to detect when I'm almost under the camera which is mounted about 3mts high

It depends on the subject and camera aiming. Typically, the issue boils down to too much scene in the camera view - limit it to the important area. Motion should be across the FOV, maybe starting near an edge. Don't have motion coming directly towards the camera. Post a snapshot of your scene for specific recommendations.
