We are looking at upgrading and adding to our current Arlo System.  I was reading up on the VMB5000 Smarthub. It states that videos can be stored to a local device, including compatible USB devices.  What USB devices are compatible?  Would an external drive be compatible?

The arlo smarthub vmb5000 uses a SD card. The arlo smarthub vmb4540 uses a USB storage device.

Only the smarthubs mentioned above feature in app viewing of the storage devices triggered recordings.

read carefully,

arlo cloud services require a subscription for cameras newer than the pro2 models.

Thank you DannyBear! With using a VPN, can both of us have access to the videos through the app? I read somewhere that this was an issue with some of the hubs.

Regards using the arlo direct storage access feature, your limited to using the admin account credentials.

What this means is that friend sharing of local stored recordings is not available. Friend sharing is only available using cloud storage only that requires a subscription plan unless you have a earlier model cameras that were bundled with the free 7days cloud storage service.

Regards the VPN requirements, yes some roadblocks depending on the isp provider.

Remember only the two latest arlo smart hubs support direct storage access.

Just to add further is that the direct storage access feature is not available if using the arlo website login interface.

Also you can not manually record to local storage as the feature is no available.

Regarding the friend sharing - would both of us be able to use the admin account on both of our phones?   Thanks again!

I expect you would  have limited shared access using multiple mobile app devices (direct access storage) but can’t confirm with my own experience since I only use cloud storage which works across multiple devices.

The limitation is you can only have one app logged in at a time. Logging in on a second app boots out any existing logged in devices.
