my network seems to be blocking the netgear server. How to solve this? Do I need to configure ports on my router?

Possibly. Who owns the router - you or the ISP? Some ISP-owned routers have needed reconfiguration to allow Arlo to work. If it's yours, have you changed any security settings? Ports 80, 123 and 443 to arlo.netgear.com need to be open.
