Color requires sufficient lighting. When the ambient light falls past a threshold, the camera has to switch to B&W so it can still record. The built-in IR illuminators for night vision don't supply enough light nor do they have the proper color spectrum to be able to record in color at nighttime. Adding sufficient external lighting will result in color recordings. I happen to use an Arlo battery-operated light along with a camera abd the light is sufficient to get me color. Of course, I'm not trying to light a huge area, just close to the house.
