CCTV systems are increasingly used by the police to apprehend offenders. Full face imaging is very important in this respect and therefore subject forward movement detection is very important. So the fact that the Arlo system doesn't provide this is very dissappointing. Left right/right left movement is not at all adequate and it's surprising that Arlo fails to recognise this.

You're right in that the motion detection can be iffy. This is a limitation of the PIR sensor. The Arlo Pro camera has significantly better motion detection.

The Arlo Pro also has significantly less lag between detecting motion and recording starting.

I started with a 4 camera Arlo system and bought an Arlo Pro add on camera. Given this camera is signficantly better, it now resides above my front door area as this is the most critical for me to get faces

Additionally, I have built in redundancy by using one of the Arlo cameras at 90 degrees to my front door camera. This camera not only records but triggers the front door camera to record. Someone walking towards the front door does cross the PIR motion detection zone earlier and is more easily detected. 

Obviously, anything wireless will have certain limitations based on the need to conserve battery power. We'd all love to have the cameras recording 24/7 but then they would need to be wired in. Pros don't come without cons
