Since we found out when the base unit is not operating we cannot access video.  What happens if someone disconnects the base unit  or I lose internet how do I retrieve video footage.

You can retrieve videos that have been sent normally.  If the communication between the base and the Arlo servers is broken for any reason any videos are lost.  You can do various things such as using a UPS for all network gear to fly through power outages but loss of Internet access breaks the system.  

Any security device can be circumvented depending on the exact scenario...
