Change in 7 day recording

So I went to change some of the rules for my recording, I have had my system for over a year and now it wont let me change the recording setting.  It is basically telling me that I have to upgrade to a plan.  What I loved about this was being able to record for 7 days.  But now it wont let me create rules unless I subscribe.  How do you take away a key reason for buying the system.
