Camera lens covering

The cameras have a thin plastic covering over the lens out of the box.  Should I remove the covering?  Do I lose functionality by leaving the covering on the lens?

Absolutely remove it for best clarity!

I only removed the circle cut on the plastic cover to get the lens exposed, I left most of the plastic on it. IR and detection seemed to work fine.
