Is one base station stronger than another, providing better range, or are they all the same when it comes to range?

I haven't tried them all, but the ones I have tried have about the same range.

The VMB5000 is dual-band, but the only camera that supports 5 gHz is the Ultra.  I wouldn't get that base for that feature - in most cases the cameras are too far from the base to use 5 gHz.

The VMB4540 and VMB5000 bases support direct access to local storage, which is a more compelling reason to get those bases.
