I saw this on the Official Arlo Twitter feed.  Apparently you CAN install the camera behind a window and expect to work normally.  I thought it was a big NO-NO

TMK;

Glass is specifically designed to pass visible wavelengths and most glass is also designed to block infrared energy for efficiency. When we get to the infrared wavelengths glass becomes a mirror or filter. It is designed to pass the visible wavelengths but reject the longer infrared wavelengths.

You need to think of the glass as an insulating material and not the crystal clear stuff we are used to seeing through. Visible short wavelengths pass freely through the glass but the IR is heat energy and the glass blocks these wavelengths as an insulator against the heat.

Thanks, thats what I thought........  I dont understand why they would want to mislead potential customers like that.....

Hula_Rock,

You are correct in that the camera is not likely to work through glass for the reasons TomMac has mentioned in his above post. I have escalated this twitter post to be sure more pictures like this are not posted as they definitely can be misleading.

Thank you,

It will stream live and record during the day thru glass.  Just the motion detect and night IR illuminators are prob not

( esp thru the dirty glass 🙂 )

Hi guys, I am fresh meat to the Arlo world so go easy on me. I currently have a standard Arlo mounted outside my front door covering my driveway. (love it - perfect for my needs)  I would like to add a second camera to it that will be internally mounted at head height looking out through the glass panel on my front door, that im hoping will get a good mug-shot of anyone casing the place or up to no good. I have read in this community that I cant use motion sensing through glass and that the led's will reflect off the glass in night time mode. Is there any way of using the rules that the outdoor camera's IR detection will trigger the second camera located inside behind the glass to start recording? I plan to turn night time mode off on the internal camera to have no dazzle, the outdoor security lights should be enough to illuminate any unwanted night visitors so I can get some nice footage. cheers in advance..

Two ways to do this.

1) Create a custom mode that has at least two rules in it:

Outdoor camera detects motion and records
Outdoor camera detects motion and indoor camera records

You do this by using the Mode tab, click on your base and create a new mode. Note that only one rule will be set up initially. Save and reedit that mode to add rules.

2) The indoor Q cameras work well through glass including motion detection since they use a different detection scheme.

With either scenario, you may have to use some masking around the camera to prevent indoor lights from reflecting and washing out the view.
