Microphone on doorbell not picking anything up

I have never been able to hear anyone through the doorbell. 
i have no issues with speaking down the phone and they can hear me. But its almost like the microphone has never worked.

do all doorbells have 2 way intercom. Thanks

The doorbell is two-way.

One troubleshooting suggestion - try using a headset, and see if you can hear with the headset.
