I can't get a sufficient grip on the battery to pull with enough force to pull it out. It popped in with such a satisfactory sound....but I don't think I'll ever be able to remove it.

That's not the battery - that's separating the camera from the case.
Removing the battery can be a bit tough since it clicks into place. You could try a small suction cup to provide a better grip or CAREFULLY using a pointed object to get it moving.

This may sound ridiculous, but how do you pull the battery out of the camera?
First I press and release the button. That generally lets me pull the battery out a little (but not all the way). If if doesn't, you can shake the camera body, and see if that helps.
Then I press/release the button again, and can pull the battery the rest of the way.
I think the issue is that the O-ring is tight (which isn't a bad thing, since it keeps water out). It can be lubricated with bit of silicon lube (after you get the camera open of course).

True - I misunderstood the issue.
FWIW, I've never had any issues getting the battery out - once I got the camera out of the shell.

Once the mounts came in, I installed them, making the point moot.
But boy, oh boy, I hope I never have to take those batteries out!
