The Legacy cameras, (Original wire free, pro, pro 2, Arlo Q, Q Plus) can be used with the basic plan as long as you do not upgrade to a new subscription. The newer devices will require a smart subscription.

Why can’t I add my new Pro 2 to the existing system modes without paying for smart? The legacy modes work - why can’t it work with the new camera?

You can certainly add a Pro 2 camera without a subscription as long as you don't exceed the 5 camera limit.
